Scientists make surprising discovery after extracting DNA from mummified cheetah

In 2022 and 2023, researchers with the National Center for Wildlife in Saudi Arabia were making their rounds through caves near the northern city of Arar — standard survey work, looking for signs of living wildlife. What they found instead was something the scientific world had never documented before: seven cheetahs, naturally mummified by the cave environment's hyper-arid conditions, soft tissue and skeletons still largely intact.
