Lake Mead hits record low water level as Colorado River concerns grow

Colorado sits at the headwaters of this crisis — the Rocky Mountains are where the Colorado River begins, fed by snowpack every winter and released downstream every summer. That means what happens to Lake Mead is, in a very real sense, a story about what happens to Colorado's water.

The Bureau of Reclamation — which has tracked Lake Mead's levels since the reservoir was first filled in the 1930s — recorded the lake at 1,040.46 feet. That broke the previous record low of 1,040.5 feet set on July 28, 2022. Lake Powell, the river's second-largest reservoir, is closing in on its own record low of 3,519.92 feet set in April 2023.

The drop isn't just about this year's drought. Aquifer reserves across the Colorado River Basin — underground water supplies cities tap when the river runs short — have lost 13.7 trillion gallons since 2002, according to NASA estimates. That's water that took thousands of years to accumulate, being drawn down in decades.

Lake Mead's water level had actually recovered for a couple of years after the 2022 record low, buoyed by several wet winters. But Bureau of Reclamation data shows the lake's elevation has fallen every single day since July 31 of this year.

How Much Do You Know About the Colorado River Crisis?

Four questions. The answers may surprise you.

Lake Mead just broke its all-time record low. What was the previous record, and when was it set?

Cities drawing from underground aquifers have depleted those reserves significantly. How much water has the Colorado River Basin's aquifer system lost since 2002?

The federal proposal includes cutting about 300,000 acre-feet in Nevada. How does that compare to a familiar unit of measurement?

Lake Mead's level had recovered somewhat after the 2022 crisis. What reversed that recovery?

The Department has a responsibility to ensure the Colorado River system remains reliable and resilient for the millions of Americans, communities, and industries that depend on it. This framework provides the flexibility to respond to changing hydrologic conditions while preserving the opportunity for Basin States to continue working toward durable, consensus-based solutions.Doug Burgum, Interior Secretary

The federal framework released last week doesn't just describe the problem — it sets the rules for how the river will be managed through 2036. It establishes specific thresholds and ranges for how water is released and rationed, while giving federal authorities enough flexibility to adjust as conditions change. Some states are also exploring longer-term alternatives, including desalination plants that would convert seawater into fresh water.

For Southern Nevada, the math is stark: allocations will be reduced in both 2027 and 2028. But officials there point to years of aggressive conservation as a buffer. The Southern Nevada Water Authority reports community water use is already below 200,000 acre-feet — meaning the cuts, while real, may not hit residents as hard as the numbers suggest.

The Colorado River crisis isn't an abstraction for Denver. Colorado is one of the seven basin states whose water rights, winter snowpack, and agricultural demands are woven into the river's math. The same snowmelt that fills ski resorts and Front Range reservoirs feeds the river system that Lake Mead and Lake Powell are built to store.

Whatever framework the federal government lands on — whether cuts, conservation mandates, or desalination investments — Colorado will be at the negotiating table. The record low recorded last week is a number, but it represents a system under pressure that will require every state in the basin, including this one, to make difficult choices.
